Before you buy

Choose an office chair by its seat-height range, seat depth and desk clearance. Use this checklist before comparing models.

What should you check first?

Use these four checks while reading a product listing. Open the explanations below when you need more detail.

Will the seat height work for you?

Look for a seat that adjusts to let your feet rest on the floor or a stable footrest while your back remains supported. That is the practical check described in OSHA’s chair guidance.

How to compare height ranges

Record the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum seat height, not the overall chair height. These are different measurements, and the overall height includes the backrest. Compare the adjustment range with a chair you can already sit in comfortably at your desk. If the listing omits seat height, open the specification sheet or ask the seller for that measurement. A product photo cannot establish whether the seat will lower enough for you.

Does an “ergonomic” label guarantee a good fit?

No. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety explains that a chair must suit the person, the workstation and the task. A broad label does not establish those three things.

What to check beyond the label

Read the seat-depth and backrest adjustments as carefully as the materials or colour. Compare armrest height and width with your normal typing position and the space beneath your desk. CCOHS notes that armrests can become unhelpful when they prevent you from sitting close enough to the keyboard. When trying a chair, check it at your working desk rather than judging comfort from a brief sit away from the workstation. Record which adjustment solved a fit problem.

What should you confirm before ordering?

Confirm the exact model, its adjustment ranges and the seller’s return conditions. OSHA’s purchasing checklist recommends trying a chair for comfort and fit before purchase and cautions that its criteria will not suit every body type.

Keep a short comparison note

Save the model name, seat-height range, seat depth and return deadline together. Check whether return shipping or disassembly is your responsibility, rather than assuming every seller offers the same conditions. If two listings use the same product photograph, compare their model numbers and included parts before treating them as identical. A lower price is only useful when the version and conditions meet your needs. Then use our chair comparison to narrow your shortlist.
